“A writer of passion, memory and heart.” Elif Shafak
From Paris and Istanbul to West Berlin and Tel Aviv, this unconventional thriller of love and revenge – also a gripping, thought-provoking tribute to Kafka – brings the Cold War to life.
The new novel by Burhan Sönmez (his sixth) is his first written in his mother tongue, Kurdish. This imaginative literary obituary for Kafka vividly recreates a key period of history in the 1960s, when the Berlin Wall divided Europe. More than a typical mystery, Lovers of Franz K. explores the value of books, and the issues of anti-Semitism, immigration, and violence that recur in Kafka’s life and writings. Translated by Sami Hêzil.
Burhan Sönmez was born in Turkey. While practising law and campaigning for human rights, he was badly injured during a murder attempt by the Turkish police and left the country. He remained in exile for several years. He was awarded the Vaclav Havel Center Disturbing the Peace award in 2017 and his novel Istanbul, Istanbul won the EBRD Literature Prize. He is President of PEN International.
