## Avi Shlaim

Avi Shlaim places Israel’s policy towards the Gaza Strip under the lens, arguing that Israel has gone beyond land-grabbing and ethnic cleansing to commit the crime of all crimes – genocide.

ā€œHis personal odyssey confers on Shlaim an exceptional authority for his words; he can say things that others of us cannot.ā€ The Sunday Times on Three Worlds

Avi Shlaim places Israel’s policy towards the Gaza Strip under the lens, arguing that Israel has gone beyond land-grabbing and ethnic cleansing to commit the crime of all crimes – genocide.

Avi Shlaim believes that the historian’s most fundamental task is not to chronicle but to evaluate it; subjecting the claims of all the protagonists to rigorous scrutiny and rejecting those that do not stand up. The brutal war launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip in response to the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 was a major landmark in the blood-soaked history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The death toll far exceeds the combined total of the previous seven offensives. In Genocide in Gaza, he argues that these recurrent attacks are the inevitable result of Zionist settler colonialism whose basic objective is the elimination of the native population.

Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of St Antony’s College, Avi Shlaim is a globally renowned historian of the modern Middle East. An Arab Jew, he was born in Baghdad in 1945; grew up in Israel; served in the Israel Defence Forces; and received his university education at Cambridge and the London School of Economics. Weaving together the personal and the political, his 2023 memoir, Three Worlds: Memoirs of an Arab-Jew, offers a fresh perspective on Arab-Jews, caught in the crossfire of Zionism and nationalism. It won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize.
