📖 The Story of the Lost Child, the fourth and final novel in Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet, returns us to the fierce, unstable bond between Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo as their lives draw once more into uneasy proximity in Naples. By this point, friendship has become something larger and stranger than companionship: a source of rivalry, recognition, dependence, injury, and self-knowledge. Ferrante brings the quartet’s central tensions—class and ambition, motherhood and authorship, departure and belonging, the violence of the neighbourhood and the seductions of reinvention—into their most intimate form. As the series closes, the novel asks what it really means to escape one’s origins, whether another person can ever be fully known, and how memory and writing reshape the lives we believe we have lived. Our discussion will consider both the final novel and the quartet as a whole, especially the unresolved, often troubling question at its centre: what, in the end, has Elena’s lifelong attachment to Lila made possible—and what has it cost?

📚 About the series
Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels, also known as the Neapolitan Quartet, is a single 1,700 page novel in four volumes about the lives of and relationship between two girls becoming women in Naples: Lina and Elena. The four volumes (My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child) were published by Europa Editions in English between 2012 and 2015. The New York Times has named My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante the best book of the 21st century, cementing the series' status as a modern literary masterpiece that chronicles a complex female friendship against the backdrop of post-war Naples.
As part of the group, we will read 4 books with adequate spacing between each one. This is the fourth and the final meetup for the series. I'm looking forward to the discussions 😊
