About us
Hello!
We are Blue in a Red State! We get together to discuss politics, social issues, philosophy, art, culture, current events, social and cultural intersections, and anything and everything else of interest to our members. We strive to keep these discussions at worst, civil and productive, but hopefully, friendly, engaging, and exploratory!
Our group is open to anyone of any or no religious or political affiliation(s); our only ‘mandatory beliefs’ are about:
- Civil discourse: we want conversations to be open, friendly, and productive, not hostile, dishonest, or dismissive.
- Free-thought: all beliefs and opinions can be explored, all beliefs and opinions may rightfully be examined, appraised, and constructively criticized. One’s own beliefs and opinions may need to be explained, tested, and defended. True beliefs and opinions should be held and beliefs and opinions should be discarded, and we want people interested in this as introspection of our own beliefs and opinions as well as outward exploration of the beliefs and opinions of others.
We have no positions of authority within our group from which to dictate to others. (I, Nancy, as organizer, exert my authority to plan events and make restaurant reservations!) Our group has no membership dues, event fees, or tithes. When dining at a restaurant, we get separate checks; if we do an occasional ‘field trip’ event at a ticketed venue, we would buy separate tickets. Thank you for your interest and we hope to see you at any of our meetings. We hope to make a good impression and get to know you in the future!
