June Book Club: The Vanishing Half - Brit Bennett

June's book club is The Vanishing Hald by Brit Bennett. This novel debuted at number one on the NY Times fiction vest seller list on its release in 2020.

The book is a multi-generational family saga following identical sisters Desiree and Stella growing up in the deep south in the 1950s. Both are black with very light skin. Following a traumatic family event, the sisters' lives start to diverge as they go out into the working world, with Stella beginning to pass for white. The twins' contrasting experiences due to how society treats them have long term effects that echo down the decades to come.
