Ulysses - James Joyce - Chapters 2 & 3 (Nestor & Proteus))

Ulysses reading group!

We will be reading chapters 2 (Nestor) and 3 (Proteus) which is around 25 pages (ending on pg. ~50, depending on your edition).

If you didn't make the first or second meeting, that is OK. Also, if you're not in the Whatsapp group and would like to be (and have attended an event before) send me a message.

Brief Overview

Chapter 2 is short (10 pages) and has a writing style not too dissimilar to the first chapter. It follows Stephen while he teaches a class of students and then later interacts with the school's headmaster, Mr. Deasy.

Chapter 3 follows Stephen as he strolls along the beach after teaching. Almost the entirety of this episode is "in Stephen's mind". The prose can be challenging, but is highly rewarding if you spend a little time with it and don't rush it. If you struggle with this chapter, you may take solace in knowing that we meet Leopold Bloom in Chapter 3 and will be spared from the artiste's mind for a while.
