Ulysses - James Joyce - Chapters 6 & 7 (Hades & Aeolus)
Details
Ulysses reading group!
We will be reading chapters 6 (Hades) and 7 (Aeolus). This is about 70 pages in total!
We will meet at Lincoln Belmont branch at 12:30! Apologies for the later time, it was the only booking I could get.
Brief Overview of the chapters
For chapter 6, Hades, Bloom joins a carriage of Dublin men (incl. Stephen's father) travelling to Paddy Dignam's funeral at Glasnevin Cemetery. The episode maps onto Dante's descent into the underworld, but Joyce renders it mundane and somewhat comic — the action is Bloom's internal meditation on death, his father's suicide, and his dead son Rudy.
For chapter 7, Bloom is in a Dublin newspaper office. The episode is titled Aeolus (the son of Hippotes) and is structured around wind and rhetoric. The chapter is filled with fake newspaper headlines which mostly describe what happens in the following paragraph(s). Bloom tries to place an ad, Stephen drifts through.
Looking forward to discussing the reading with you all, as per usual.
