"This 16-room, 1869 brick mansion on one of the highest hills in Alton was purchased on impulse at auction in 1994 by Sharyn and George Luedke. Built by Henry and Eleanor McPike in 1869, the family lived there until 1938. But, when the Luedkes purchased it, the residence had been vacant since the 1950s, and their intention was to repair the damage done by vandals and the weather and open it as a small hotel and banquet room.

However, shortly after they acquired the property, someone called and told them the mansion was haunted, and Sharyn, who describes herself as “being afraid of just about anything,” was not thrilled. “We were told it should be burned down and sprinkled with holy water,” she says.
Sharyn saw her first ghost shortly after purchasing the house as she was working outside. Glancing up, she saw a man looking out a window, although no one was supposed to be inside the house. When she went inside, no one was there. Later, a relative found some old pictures of the last owner of the home, Paul Laichinger. In them, he was wearing the same clothes Sharyn had seen from the garden.

Soon after their purchase the Luedkes learned they could not get the promised grant money for restoration of the residence. So they began offering ghost tours, using the money from the tours toward the renovation, which is still underway.

Today, 32 years later, thousands of visitors and paranormal investigators have visited, and the ghostly reputation of the Victorian estate is recognized as one of the most haunted locations in the country.
Sharyn says she has had well over 100 encounters with her ghostly inhabitants, some of which may originate from the graveyard discovered on the property. On one occasion a door upstairs slammed shut and frightened her. When she went to investigate, she found a window open. “I think they just wanted me to come up and fix it,” she remarks. On other occasions she has repeatedly seen the ghost of a woman thought to have worked at the house. “She likes wearing perfume that smells of lavender,” Sharyn says.

The wine cellar is the most active paranormal area in the house. Voices and footsteps have been heard down there, and a mysterious mist tends to follow people. Psychics are convinced that Henry and Eleanor McPike still roam the upstairs corridors of their former home. Pacing footsteps, vanishing objects, shadow figures, orbs and the sensation of being touched are common phenomena.
But each of the 12 identified spirits seems friendly, says Sharyn."
