Paddle the Upper Half of Pool 6 on the Kentucky River
Details
Let's put in at Cummins Ferry near Nonsuch, Kentucky (note specific directions below) and paddle upriver as far as we'd like, then turn around and head home.
This is an area full of waterfalls (likely dry at the moment), palisades, and history, including Mundy's Landing, the last stop of riverboat travelers heading up the Kentucky River in pre-lock and dam days. You can still see the tavern built there in the 1840s to accommodate them, although it's now a private residence. The leaves are beginning to change, which in my opinion is the best time to be on the river!
This won't be a float: we'll paddle (but not race) both ways, likely covering 8 to 10 miles roundtrip. We'll stop somewhere along the way to stretch our legs and have a snack.
Paddles in the water at 11 a.m. We'll go upstream as far as we feel like, and then return to the put-in. If you're late, head upstream (left) from the launch ramp. If you decide to need to make a shorter day of it, you can always turn around and head back. There's almost no current on the Kentucky right now, so paddling upstream won't be hard.
Bring all the usual stuff: pfd, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, snacks and hydration. And your camera! Launch ramp is free, no facilities (although you might be able to use the campground bathroom if you're respectful).
You must have your own boat for this trip. Sorry, no rentals available.
Note on directions: Nomenclature can be confusing here. Lots of things are called Cummins Ferry. You do NOT want to go to Cummins Ferry RV Park, which is on the other side of the river and only available to registered campers. You want Camp on the Kentucky.
