Blackouts, by Justin Torres

An unnamed narrator cares for his mentor in a desert hospice as they create blackout poetry together by redacting portions of Sex Variants: A Study of Homosexual Patterns.

The real life study was based on the research of journalist Jan Gay and her interviews with LGBT people through the 20s and 30s. Her research was redacted and turned into the Variants Study which pathologized homosexuality against her wishes. In redacting the study to create poetry, the narrator and his mentor reclaim their narrative.
