【Details】
1. Engaku-ji Temple (円覚寺)
We begin our journey at Engaku-ji, one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in Japan. Founded in 1282, it was built to commemorate those who fell during the Mongol invasions.
• Highlight: As you enter through the grand Sanmon Gate, feel the atmosphere shift. The vast temple grounds are nestled into the hillside, offering a perfect introduction to the "Kamakura Five" Zen temples.
2. Traditional Soba Lunch
For lunch, we will enjoy Soba (buckwheat noodles), a staple of the Kamakura diet.
• Why Soba? Soba is light, healthy, and deeply rooted in Japanese culture. In this area, many shops serve handmade noodles with seasonal tempura. It is the perfect meal to keep us energized for our walk.
🥗 Also the menu has kenchin-jiru (vegetable soup) and others.
3. Choju-ji Temple (長寿寺)
Next, we visit Choju-ji, the family temple of Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
• The Garden: This temple is famous for its stunning Japanese garden.
• Meditation: We will sit on the wooden veranda (engawa) overlooking the moss and maple trees. This is an ideal spot for a quiet meditation session. Simply breathe, listen to the rustling leaves, and find your inner calm.
☝️This garden is only this season and only weekends‼︎
4. Kamegayatsu Pass (亀ヶ谷切通し)
Next destination is Kamakura area.
• History: In the 13th century, Kamakura was a natural fortress surrounded by mountains and sea. This "Kiri-doshi" (cut-through) is one of the seven historic passes carved directly into the rock to allow travel while maintaining the city's defenses. It is a steep but beautiful path that shows the unique geography of the region.
5. Kaizo-ji Temple (海蔵寺)
Our final stop is Kaizo-ji, often called the "Temple of Flowers."
• Highlights: This temple is known for its peaceful, secluded vibe and its "Sixteen Wells"—mysterious ancient wells located in a small cave on the grounds.
• Seasonal Beauty: Depending on the month, you might see beautiful hydrangeas, lilies, or autumn leaves. It is a hidden gem that perfectly concludes our day of Zen discovery.
