The Second JUG Meetup!

Details

Are you ready for the second Dubai JUG?
We are pleased to announce the second iteration of the Dubai JUG meetup, hosted by PwC Middle East at their state-of-the-art Experience Center!

We have amazing speakers lined up and joining us to share their knowledge and experience around the world of Java.

Agenda

5:30 PM - 6:00 PM: Drinks & Food, Welcome to the Java Community - Jad Salhani
In this session, you will be introduced to the Dubai JUG and you will get an overview of the latest and greatest features of Java, as well as an overview of Foojay.io, a place for friends of OpenJDK. Are you new to Java? Have you used Java for a long time already? In either case, this session is perfect for you to get fine tuned on what is new and where the Java community is going next and how you can be involved in Dubai.

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Performance - Chris Thalinger
In today's Software Development world the number one demand from employers is to deliver features as soon as possible. Everything else is secondary. That means engineers are doing only one thing: writing new code, debugging, and writing new code again. And most of the time this code is running in one of the very convenient clouds. Rarely anyone ever stops and thinks about performance as a whole. If performance is an issue the to-go solution is to throw more money at it. Which usually means buying more computing power in the cloud. But is this really the best way of solving that issue? We should make ourselves aware how wasteful our industry is sometimes and think about ways to avoid that.

7:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Break - Drinks & Food

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Improve Java Tests with Mutants! - Paco van Beckhoven
In this session, you will enter the world of mutation testing. By generating mutants, that is, faulty versions of your code, you can measure how well your tests can detect bugs. You will learn about mutation tools, how they work, and how to get started, as well as when you should consider mutation testing. Want better code that is well tested? Come to this session!

8:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Socializing, Drinks & Food

Event Speakers:
Chris Thalinger is a software engineer working on Java Virtual Machines for over 18 years. His main expertise is in compiler technology with Just-In-Time compilation in particular. Initially being involved with the CACAO and GNU Classpath projects, the focus shifted to OpenJDK as soon as Sun made the JDK open-source. Ever since Chris has worked on the HotSpot JVM at Sun, Oracle and Twitter.

Paco van Beckhoven is a passionate software engineer who likes to challenge the world and the software around him. He works as a consultant for OpenValue where he helps customers build better software. A few years ago, he started speaking at conferences to entertain, and more importantly, educate visitors on various topics. After completing his master thesis on test effectiveness, he has been trying to educate more people about mutation testing.

Jad Salhani is a Software Engineer who has dived into the software engineering world since his second year of university. Since then, he has experimented with almost all major technologies ranging from Ionic Framework, Angular, Laravel to Swift, Objective-C and Android.
Currently, Jad is working as Solution Architect at PwC Middle East, and has built many applications using Ionic framework, Swift and Android Java, as well as their backend systems using PHP and Laravel.
In his free-time, Jad loves to mentor students on Codementor.io, as well as contribute to open-source projects or create libraries / tools of his own to share with the community.
