JUNE: Bliss and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield
If last time we explored the bond with a stranger, next time we are going to explore how the familiar can suddenly become strange, as we discuss four short stories by the wonderful writer Katherine Mansfield, a master at capturing the evanescent sensations of daily life. Whether it’s children in relation to their parents and the adult world, or husbands and wives in their relationships with one another, there are times when the significant others that we take for granted show us a new and unfamiliar face. How to come to terms with the ultimate unknowability of other people, and of ourselves…? All the characters in these stories are wrestling with their own desires, illusions, and need for meaning in the face of a reality that eludes them in strange ways. And this time, prepare for a deep dive into perspectivism! Because in Mansfield’s world, every object and event, every detail, is imbued with subjective meanings and moods, always filtered by a particular perspective, always seen through a peculiar and emotionally colored lens.
