JSON features in MySQL and MariaDB

Imagine you have to design a database for an e-commerce website. Tens of product types will be sold, each with specific characteristics – but also common attributes, like the cost, quantity in stack, and more.

How would you do it? As we’ll discuss, there are several traditional ways to solve this problem in a relational database – and all of them are a pain in the neck. That’s one of the reasons why NoSQL technologies had a big success for some time.

Modern versions of MySQL and MariaDB (as well as most major database systems) support JSON columns. Having JSON documents in a relational database allows to use them with flexible indexes, transactions, a well-defined schema, and integrity constraints. In other words, it’s a way to mix structured and semi-structured data, enjoying the best of the two worlds.

In this session we will discuss with realistic examples how to take advantage of semi-structure data in MySQL and MariaDB.
