Hays County Beekeepers Association is committed to educating both beekeepers and the public about honey bees and native bees in the Hays County and greater Austin area. We organize free social and educational meetings every month where anyone can come and chat about honeybees and other pollinators, share books and ideas on the subject, help each other, and establish some cooperatively managed honeybee colonies around town.
Pesticides, fungicides, scarce forage and other pests and diseases threaten our bee populations of collapse, so we strive to educate interested people on best practices and the tools needed to promote and maintain healthy colonies; while answering questions both beekeepers and the general public may have about bees and more particularly honey bees. Throughout the world, people in urban areas are more and more cooperatively cultivating bees using shared resources to build up bee populations, enhance public education and cultivate their own communities - not to mention producing their own honey in natural ways, unadulterated and free of toxic chemicals.
To this effect, we curate informative topics and host experienced speakers of interest at our meetings based on beekeeping seasons; and focus on scientific research and the latest research to educate our members. All meetings are open to the public, and our well stocked lending library ( https://hcbabeebooks.libib.com/ ) is open to members, along with the use of our extracting equipment.
Please note that, at HCBA meetings, we have conscientiously chosen to focus on SUSTAINABLE BEEKEEPING, and are mindful to not systematically promote the prophylactic use of toxic treatments that could unnecessarily stress colonies. Instead, we promote an intelligence approach to IPM (Integrated Pest Management) as advised by TAIS, the office of the Texas Apiary Inspection Services. If you would like to become part of the natural solution by joining our urban beekeeping project in Austin and Hays County, if you have some insight or expertise to lend, or if you're just interested in finding out more, please do sign up!
HCBA monthly meetings are held on the THIRD Wednesday of each month at the VISTA BREWING Beer Garden in Driftwood - 13551 FM 150, Driftwood TX 78619 (you may buy diner and drinks there if you'd like and have diner while listening to the topics discussed, but the meeting is open to all free of charge, and we will have the place to ourselves as the Brewery is not open otherwise on Wednesdays!)
6:30pm-7pm, Beginners Q&A and Lessons
7pm-9pm, Main meeting/Guest Speaker.
In addition, HCBA hosts a "Chat with the Beekeepers" social at VISTA BREWING in Driftwood every FIRST SUNDAY of the month, 6pm-8pm.
We hope you enjoy our schedule of speakers and topics and that you join us in person!
