What we're about

Hello amigos :)

Welcome to Orla Yoga. You can find general details, and stay updated on my classes by signing-up to my newsletter on Orla Yoga webpage (https://orlayoga.com/). I post regularly to Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/orlayoga/?hl=en) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/YogaOrla), also. Here, you can find some interesting content via pics, videos etc. relating to wellbeing, healthy habits and yoga. If you'd like to get an idea as to my teaching style, you can check out Orla Yoga free YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCez6RJ9GriiHv2xPxEuoXGQ). These include 2 30 Day Challenges: One for total beginners, which can also be a nice option if you want to ease yourself back into practicing, after a long break. The other is a series of 10min videos, encouraging you to practice consistency, in bringing yoga back into your daily life. Quality over quantity, friends.

So, what's this group all about? A way of reaching out to those of you looking to make a healthy mind-body connection; find flow; ease of movement; healthy, nourishing habits; and rhythm in your own body. Yoga is a wonderful opportunity to align your body and mind, with endless opportunities for growth. I also encourage a community element: a friendly, open practice space, where everyone is welcome and welcoming. We are all on our own journey, but we can be there for each other along the way.

Yoga for Improvers

Online event

Hello,

Working with the times :) I'll be offering this class live, via Zoom.

PRE BOOKING CLASS IS REQUIRED. This can be done at https://orlayoga.com/.

This class is aimed at the intermediate level practitioner. Yoga for Improvers is for those of you who have been practising for some time and want to be challenged, learn new poses, and experiment with your practice while working on strength, mobility, and balance. Also, if you have noticed that your current practice has stagnated, you are seeking a spark to get you back into a more regular practice but are already familiar with the basic poses and breath to movement technique, then this class may be just the boost you seek.

Yoga stills the mind by finding one-pointedness in our poses and coming into a state of awareness and connection between body and mind. By the time we enter into the intermediate stage, we may have started to recognise a number of changes in our practice. We may feel quite comfortable with alignment and more ready to engage in more complex poses in a safe and healthy way. We understand that no pose is easy or difficult, nor does it always look the same - we enjoy the process and are open to the unique nature of each practice. Usually, as we begin our yoga practice we may do well to practice once a week. If you find yourself wanting to practice more often or trying to supplement class in the studio with home practice, then step up and try the intermediate class. Usually, at the intermediate level, we are forming a clearer connection between our core and overall ability to move well in poses. First, we need the alignment from beginners. Then comes a more profound understanding of core engagement. Core work keeps our practice light and effortless and allows us to create deeper backbends, strong chaturanga, and lightness in our sun salutes. At the intermediate stage, we may also have begun to understand the importance of the breath and want to continue to deeper our knowledge - the breath not only allows us to move through poses but also supports us in each pose and transition, allows us to ground and find softness with each exhale while lifting us and aiding us in finding lightness with each inhale. It serves us in finding a more meditative state and finding concentration and softness in the pose.

“Yoga is not a work out; it is a work in. And this is the point of spiritual practice, to make us teachable, to open up our hearts, and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are.” Rolf Gates

And so, in this class, we will work on creating a deeper connection to the breath; patience, and humility in practice; strengthening our core to aid our overall asana, and expanding the range of poses we can do. We will explore different breath techniques, give time to meditating and finding stillness, checking in with our own body before beginning to move, and learning to listen to our internal cues. As we deepen the practice, we begin to become our own teachers. Our intermediate class will focus on learning to understand that each time we come to the mat our body has different needs and so one day we may push ourselves more, while another practice may demand more softness and slower movements. We will build resilience and endurance through working on a strong core and hopefully have some fun along the way.

Beginners Yoga Flow

Online event

Hello,

Working with the times :) I'll be offering this class live, via Zoom.

PRE BOOKING CLASS IS REQUIRED. This can be done at https://orlayoga.com/.

Beginners Yoga Flow

The Beginners Yoga flow is a wonderful way to dip your toes into the area of yoga. This class is aimed at anybody who is keen to explore yoga for the first time and is looking to do so in a relaxed, supportive, and fun environment. This class is also suitable for you if you have not practised yoga in some time and are looking for a way to get back into practice in a gentle, mindful way.

Beginning any new practice or getting back into an activity after a period of absence is usually the hardest step. So, well done on getting this far and I encourage you to continue with your exploration and attend a class. It will feel unfamiliar at the beginning and you may feel impatient for results or challenged by the unfamiliarity of taking time to give back to yourself. But, taking time for yourself and using that time to slow down, and aid your body and mind in finding a healthful time in the week to be without distraction, is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself and those around you.

When we are beginning our yoga practice, it is important to find a style and a teacher that resonates with us. So, I encourage you to come and try a class and see how you feel before booking a block of classes. It is also very different from other forms of movement. This class will be an opportunity to move mindfully and in a breath centred way. Yoga will offer you the opportunity to better connect with your body - to begin to become aware of where you hold tension and how to release this in common tight areas, such as the shoulders, neck and hips. It is a chance to practice grounding ourselves and finding a healthy connection between our mind and body. This class will guide you in being able to use yoga to stretch the body and relax the mind. Hopefully, you will learn poses that you can then use at home too. We will hold the poses for a number of breaths, repeating and building on the poses over the weeks. Muscle memory will over time, allow us to progress in our practice. We will learn how to move with our breath and how to know when to challenge ourselves more and when to find softness. This class will work on learning foundational yoga poses and a short segment of meditation each day.

“Be where you are, not where you think you should be.”

In class, we will learn the foundations of yoga, we will take time each practice to centre ourselves and connect to our breath, before beginning to warm up and stretch the body. We will then work on building on our poses in a fluid, dynamic way. Over the weeks, poses will be repeated and added on to, the body will become familiar with them but still be challenged by the varied style from class to class. You will learn where to place different parts of the body in relation to each other and common feet and hip patterns that we come back to time and time again in yoga. You will begin the lifelong learning process of how the breath supports the body, all in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

Namaste,

Orla :)

The Rhythmic Sequence

Online event

Hello,

Working with the times :) I'll be offering this class live, via Zoom.

PRE BOOKING CLASS IS REQUIRED. This can be done at https://orlayoga.com/.

Rising with the sun is an empowering way to start the day. However, few people realise the benefits of this practice. By rising with nature, we accustom our body to the natural rhythm of nature, take advantage of these quiet hours of the day and by incorporating a practice such as yoga, we support a clearer mind and stronger body in finding healthy connection and focus. We will use the heat and warmth of the rising sun to bring heat to our practice and burn away sluggishness, encouraging clarity and positive energy.

“When you listen to yourself, everything comes naturally. It comes from inside, like a kind of will to do something. Try to be sensitive. That is yoga.” Petri Raisanen

A different vibe. This class is all about getting good vibes and happy, healthy movement in first thing in the day. It is a chance to light the fire within, get ourselves motivated, clear, and creative and carry that through into the day ahead. Let us wake with nature and bring that harmony to our body and our mind, by coming to our mat for a rhythmic flow. Nowadays, there is a lot of rushing in our day-to-day life, focus on strong physical practices but little space to find softness, ease of movement, and flow in a more rhythmic way. Our rhythmic sequence is an opportunity to reconnect with the lost softness and freeness of dance-like movement, to ground our energies in the earth, and to find flow by connecting with nature. Our morning bodies tend to be stiffer and so, by finding softness we allow for healthy transformation in body & mind. By rising with the sun, we warm up our bodies and allow them to find flow for the day ahead. We will find movement to music, with a focus on shorter holds in poses and more fluidity in our transitions. Expect to move and flow in all directions. This will be a light cardio style practice, drawing on lightness of movement and finding space in our bodies.

There are countless benefits to having a practice like this at the beginning of our day as yoga gives us a unique moment to be with our body and mind and observe our energy levels. It gives an opportunity to rest in awareness and to be more fully present. It allows us the chance to set an intention for the day and so move through the day with more direction. Moreover, music helps to raise our vibration, adding another layer to our experience. A basic grounding in yoga poses is a prerequisite. By rising early and connecting with nature, set yourself up on a positive vibration, and find a healthy mind-body flow. Meditation will also be incorporated into the class and we will carry through the meditative state into our movement as we flow. Stretch, flex, sweat a little, and open to your creativity. Throughout class, we will begin to move the body in a way that welcomes an increased range of movement, tension release, and finding opening in the hip area which is typically tight on waking in the morning. We will twist and detox, creating release of new energy in the body and dynamically build heat. Great if you are a yogi looking to join an intimate class of 6, in a spacious, bright setting at our studio space on Summerhill South, Cork city.

Namaste,

Orla
