The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Details
For our October Re-Readables' meetup, we're going with a classic Halloween gothic. First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House (183 pages) has been hailed as a work of unnerving psychological terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
If you missed the first meeting, no problem -- we'd love to meet you. Remember to bring along your favorite passage to read aloud to the group.
We will meet at Susan's house in Portland's West End - exact address to be shared with attendees the day before the event.
Discussions kick off with the following topics:
- Most “re-readable” passage
- What’s aged the best?
- What’s aged the worst?
- Hot takes
- Probably unanswerable questions
- What piece of memorabilia would you want from this work?
