🏛️ Open Monumentendag Alkmaar: Hidden Monuments Walk & Social Meetup 🚶‍♀️✨

Discover the hidden side of Alkmaar during Open Monumentendag — the annual event when historic buildings and special locations across the Netherlands open their doors to visitors.
Join us for a relaxed afternoon walk through the historic heart of Alkmaar.

We will explore beautiful monuments, hidden courtyards, old merchant houses, canals, green city ramparts and charming streets that tell the story of this amazing city.

Even if you have lived in Alkmaar for years, you may discover places you have walked past many times without knowing what is behind the doors. 😊

🔄 Small change to the original route
We have made a few small adjustments to the original route because some of the monuments we initially planned to visit require individual advance reservations.
Rather than asking everyone to arrange separate tickets and time slots, we have replaced these stops with other interesting monuments that we can visit together.
We have also adjusted the walking route slightly so that we can see more of beautiful Alkmaar along the way — including the old city ramparts, Oudegracht, Waagplein, Mient and some of the city’s most picturesque historic buildings.

⛪ 🏛️ VISIT – Grote Kerk
We start at Alkmaar’s impressive medieval church in the heart of the old city.

🌬️ 🏛️ VISIT – Molen van Piet
One of Alkmaar’s most recognisable landmarks and a beautiful historic windmill on the old city ramparts.

🌳 📸 PHOTO / SCENIC WALK – Kennemerbolwerk & old city ramparts
From the windmill we continue through the green park along Alkmaar’s former defensive walls and city moat.

🛁 🏛️ VISIT – Oude Volksbadhuis
A fascinating former public bathhouse and a glimpse into everyday life in Alkmaar more than a century ago.

🌿 🏛️ VISIT – Wildemanshofje
Discover the Dutch tradition of historic hofjes and step into one of Alkmaar’s most peaceful hidden courtyards.

🌊 📸 PHOTO / SCENIC WALK – Oudegracht
Instead of walking back the same way, we continue along the beautiful Oudegracht towards the centre, with historic houses, bridges and canal views along the way.

🏛️ 🏛️ VISIT – Oude Stadhuis
The historic centre of city government, right in the middle of the beautiful Langestraat.

🔑 🏛️ VISIT – Vrijmetselaarsloge
One of the more unusual buildings on our walk and normally a place most people simply pass without seeing inside.

🧀 📸 PHOTO STOP – Waagplein & Waaggebouw
We walk through Alkmaar’s famous Waagplein and stop briefly at the iconic Waaggebouw — one of the city’s classic postcard views.

🌊 📸 PHOTO STOP – Mient
A beautiful historic part of Alkmaar with water, bridges and traditional Dutch houses.

🏠 📸 PHOTO STOP – Huis met de Kogel
One of Alkmaar’s most famous historic houses, tucked away in one of the most atmospheric parts of the old city.

📦 🏛️ VISIT – Pakhuis De Koopman
A historic warehouse that reminds us of Alkmaar’s long history as a trading city.

🗼 📸 PHOTO STOP – Accijnstoren & Bierkade
A short scenic stop by the water at one of Alkmaar’s most photogenic historic towers.

🌾 🏛️ VISIT – Pakhuis De Korenschoof
Our final monument visit: a historic warehouse on picturesque Luttik Oudorp.

🍹 FINISH – IJkgebouw
From De Korenschoof we continue to De Eendracht in ’t IJkgebouw, where anyone who would like to stay can join us for a drink.

⏳ Duration: around 3–3.5 hours including monument visits
🚶 Pace: relaxed, with time for photos, stories and conversations

This is not just a sightseeing tour — it is also a chance to meet new people while discovering Alkmaar together.
Because some monuments are relatively small, we may occasionally divide into smaller groups so everyone can comfortably visit the locations and enjoy the experience.

🍹 After the walk
Around 16:00 we will finish at De Eendracht in ’t IJkgebouw, a beautiful historic location by the water.
Those who would like to continue chatting and meeting new people are very welcome to join us for a drink. 😊
