Devil's Head Lookout
Details
By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that hiking includes inherent risks. You also agree that you participate at your own risk and are solely responsible for your safety and that it is solely your own decision as to whether you can hike safely, considering the trail conditions, the weather and all other factors.
The Devil's Head Trailhead can be reached by traveling approximately 10 miles west of Sedalia on Highway 67 to the Rampart Range Road. Turn left (south) onto Rampart Range Road and drive about 8 1/2 miles to the trailhead. Alltrails indicates that toilets are available at the trailhead.
This hike is one of our shorter hikes at only about 3.5 miles. However, it has over 1,000 feet of elevation gain before you add in the stairs up to the fire lookout tower. Years ago, there were quite a few fire lookout towers across the United States. Now, with satellites, aircraft and drones, most have closed. However, the Devil's Head fire lookout tower is still staffed by Forest Service employees. If it is open when we get there, we will climb the stairs to the lookout and meet the ranger staffing it. I did this once years ago and it was pretty cool and featured unparalleled views. This tower is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only fire tower in Colorado staffed by the National Forest Service.
Besides the visit to the Fire Lookout, the hike will also include a loop in the surrounding forest.
I plan to be in the parking area at 9:15 and begin hiking at 9:30. Look for my gold Toyota Corolla.
