Granville Heritage Trail
Details
The walk is suitable for dogs - although is likely to be wet and muddy.
A 7 miles voyage of discovery into north-east Telford's industrial past. The way-marked route is steep in parts (up and down) and utilises paths through green spaces. We explore the industrial history which lies hidden among its streets and green places. We will see the remains of the iron furnaces, mines, factories and canals.
Granville is one of the largest and most wildlife diverse of these places, much valued by local people for its recreational opportunities. The spirit of renewal is tangible here. Nature has reclaimed it after centuries of industrial activity, which finally ceased when Granville, the last deep mine in the county, closed down.
Relics of former industrial activity, including furnaces and an old winding house, are now surrounded by woodland full of birds, while pit mounds of waste have been transformed into flower-rich grassland and heath.
Bring a drink and a snack for the usual short break around half-time.
TF2 7QJ: Granville Road, Telford. You follow the signs to the Shropshire Golf Club, the approach to the car park, towards the golf club, needs a bit of care because of the unpainted speed bumps that blend into the road surface.
