Knighton, Cwm-sanaham Hill and Offa’s Dyke.
Details
From the Offa’s Dyke Centre car park we head along the banks of the river Teme, stopping briefly to cross the Welsh/English border!
After crossing the river via a footbridge and then the railway line, we cross a lane and go through a gate leading to the path towards Panpunton Hill. The path is very steep as it climbs up to Offa’s Dyke, there is a bench at the top where we can catch our breath and take in the views.
We continue to follow the path and, after a short distance, we take a short detour to the summit of Panpunton Hill where there is a small cairn and great views of the surrounding hills.
After retracing our steps we rejoin the Offa’s Dyke path and walk to the summit of the second hill on the walk, Cwm-sanaman Hill.
After a brief stop at the trig point we retrace our steps, walk up a farm track and then head across open fields eventually reaching the A488 at Five Turnings. After crossing the road with care we walk along the farm track for about 1 mile, eventually reaching a path that crosses the fields heading towards the hamlet of Stowe. There are great views down the Teme valley towards Ludlow.
Just before the farm we turn right and follow the bridleway, cross the A488 again and then follow a forestry path back to Knighton and the end of the walk.
There are plenty of watering holes in the town for those who want some post walk refreshment.
The walk is approximately 8 1/2 miles with the climb up to Panpunton Hill being the steepest section at the start.
Car share if possible as the car park has limited spaces.
