Cloud Native & Kubernetes Meetup
Details
About the Event:
Join us for an engaging, practical evening exploring the biggest challenges and newest tools in the Cloud Native landscape. We’re moving step-by-step from foundational topics to advanced cluster operations—covering critical migrations, architectural shifts, and deep-dive Kubernetes features.
### 1. Moving to Arm
- Audience Level: Intermediate
- Format: 20–30 min lecture
- What we’ll cover: Switching to Arm architecture is no longer optional—especially with cost savings and cloud options like Graviton leading the charge. We’ll break down the migration challenges, container multi-arch builds, and how to execute a smooth transition without breaking production.
### 2. Your tools are being abandoned: detection + alternatives
- Audience Level: All levels
- Format: 10-min talk + round table / open discussion
- What we’ll cover: Open-source and cloud-native tools eventually reach end-of-life or lose active maintenance. How do you detect abandoned tools early, evaluate maintainer health, and pivot to modern alternatives before tech debt catches up to you?
### 3. Tracing you didn't know you could ask for
- Audience Level: Beginner–intermediate
- Format: 30-min lecture + live demo
- What we’ll cover: Moving beyond baseline distributed tracing. We'll explore underutilized tracing capabilities that pinpoint elusive bottlenecks across microservices, paired with a live demo showing how to implement these patterns effectively.
### 4. Gateway API: why it improves on Ingress, and migrating off ingress-nginx
- Audience Level: Intermediate (prerequisites: familiarity with Ingress)
- Format: 15-min talk + round table / Q&A
- What we’ll cover: Why the Kubernetes Gateway API is replacing traditional Ingress resources. We’ll discuss the architectural motivations, key advantages, and practical strategies for migrating off legacy setups like `ingress-nginx`.
### 5. Kubernetes features you're probably not using: native sidecars + HPA, in-place resize, traffic distribution, CEL policies
- Audience Level: Intermediate–advanced (actively running production clusters)
- Format: 25–30-min lecture
- What we’ll cover: Powerful native Kubernetes features often left untapped. We'll take a deep dive into Native Sidecars and HPA interaction, Pod in-place resize without restarts, fine-grained Traffic Distribution, and native validation via CEL (Common Expression Language) policies.
