Hiking in Tring
Details
A scenic circular hiking route starting from Tring Station takes you along The Ridgeway escarpment to Ivinghoe Beacon and through the Aldbury & Pitstone Common
Starting Point: Tring Station (Hertfordshire), easily accessible by train.
Distance & Duration: Approximately 14KM (8.7 Miles) taking about 4 to 5 hours of steady walking including a stop for lunch and a drink at the pub.
Terrain: Chalk paths, grassy ridges, and compact forest dirt tracks with moderate ascents and descents.
Key Landmarks:
The Ridgeway National Trail: Following Britain's oldest road overlooking the Vale of Aylesbury.
Ivinghoe Beacon: Offering sweeping panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside.
Bridgewater Monument: A 1832 granite column on the Ashridge Estate where visitors can climb the 172 steps for an elevated viewing gallery.
Aldbury Village: A picturesque English village ideal for post-hike refreshments at a local pub.
There is a National Trust Visitor Centre at Ashridge Estate, near the trail's end, which offers amenities such as toilets and a café.
What to bring:
Rain Jacket - Waterproof, windproof outer layer for all weather conditions. 🦺
Hiking Trousers - Jeans NOT Recommended 👖
Sturdy Boots or Trail Shoes: Footwear with deep tread to prevent slipping. 🥾
Water Bottle: Minimum of 2 litres of water for a standard day hike. 💧
Packed Lunch 🥪
Backpack: To store and keep your belongings safe. 🎒
The Details:
Meet outside WHSmith’s inside London
Euston Station (map of Euston Station is within the event main page with WHSmith’s underlined in Red) from 9:45 - 10:00am for the 10:09am train, arriving into Tring at 10:51am.
I will be driving to Tring Station so feel free to do the same if you prefer.
Either way let’s all meet in the Tring Station Car Park for an 11:00am start.

Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate - The hike does contain some challenging uphill climbs and some optional extra challenges. Please take your time & don’t rush, we are all in this together.
