Out & back

Try this 6.9-mile out-and-back trail near Raleigh, North Carolina. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

The trail winds its way through a pine forest after passing hardwood woodland. The widening trail traces the former carriage roads, providing an insight into the area's past travel trails. The trail has clear markings. Hikers should be cautious of slippery roots, mainly when covered with leaves. The trail spans multiple creeks and streams as it meanders through densely forested sections.

The dense woodland offers plenty of shade, and clearly marked hiking trails aid in guiding hikers. The trail gives hikers many chances to take in the tranquil lakeside vistas.
