This week we'll be discussing The Mastermind from 2025, written and directed by Kelly Reichardt, which is available on Mubi (which offers a week's free trial), Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Watch at your leisure over the course of the week, the Zoom call is just to talk about the film and anything else you might have been watching recently :)

Here's a loose synopsis:

'In a sedate Massachusetts suburb circa 1970, unemployed family man and amateur art thief J.B. Mooney sets out on his first heist. With the museum cased and accomplices recruited, he has an airtight plan. Or so he thinks...'

And what a few reviews have to say:

'It’s ironic that The Mastermind arrives in cinemas in the very same week as the theft of £80m worth of jewels from the Louvre.'

(of Josh O'Connor in the lead role) 'It’s hard to say if he contains multitudes or just a pack of cigarettes, a can of Budweiser, and a bottomless supply of self-regard. O’Connor is brilliant at playing guys like this, who can’t be trusted but shouldn’t be written off as irredeemable.'

(of Reichhardt) 'She’s a triple threat, and no one will ever match the level of craftsmanship – and understanding of cinema as a visual medium – as she does.:

I've not seen any other of Kelly Reichardt's films, but going through her back catalogue they all sound pretty interesting. Have you seen any? What did you make of The Mastermind?

I look forward to seeing you there!
