The March meetup will be held at SAIT in the Orpheus Theatre.
First, we will have a delegation from the University of Calgary tell us all about their new data science program. Jim Stallard (http://math.ucalgary.ca/math_unitis/profiles/jim-stallard) is Professor and Associate Head for Statistics and Actuarial Science in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Usman Alim (http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~ualim/) is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and head of the Visualization And Graphics Group (VISAGG). Jim and Usman are both co-directors of the Data Science Program. Professor Matthew Greenberg will also attend, who teaches an AI/ML course that is part of the program Please find out more at https://www.ucalgary.ca/science/data-science/.
Next, we will have Geoff Kliza from the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute give us a quick update about Amii.
To close the evening, we have a few speakers from IBM. Chris Masternak (https://www.linkedin.com/in/cmaster/), data scientist at IBM, will discuss the application of machine learning tools to industrial operations data, with a focus on time-series forecasting of power prices in liberalized power markets. This will be followed by a discussion surrounding the associated use cases, and a working demo that Chris and the Watson for Natural Resources team are piloting for clients.
Christopher Vollmar and Marija Mijalkovic from IBM will also present an approach to building a data-centric platform for ML/DL development; Marija and Christopher will talk through leveraging a framework that focuses on moving data from capture to model to inference, including how to leverage multi-tenancy and hybrid cloud integration.
