Atomic Habits: The Second Law, Make It Attractive
Details
Hi everyone, we're back for our monthly chat about Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Last month we covered the first law, Make It Obvious, and had a great discussion! This time we're on the second law, Make It Attractive.
A few things we'll be getting into:
- Why do some habits feel effortless while others feel like a slog?
- What's one habit you've tried pairing with something you already enjoy, and did it stick?
- Does temptation bundling actually work in real life, or does it fall apart after a week?
Clear talks about how our environment and the people around us shape what we find appealing. Curious whether anyone has seen that play out firsthand.
Before Friday: If possible, read the second law section and bring one example from your own life. If you haven't finished, come, no worries, come anyway. This is a relaxed conversation we'll be having, not a quiz.
Background about The Self Improvement Book Club
The idea is to have fun discussing concepts from the book and inspire you to apply these concepts in your own lives.
You DO NOT need to have read the book. Just bring your experience and curiosity.
Brief summary of the book:
Atomic Habits is James Clear's book about how small, repeatable actions add up to big changes over time. His main argument is that people fail at habits not because they lack willpower, but because they rely on motivation instead of building better systems. He breaks habit formation into four laws: make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying. The book is full of practical tactics like habit stacking, designing your environment so good choices are the default, and never missing twice. It's an easy read and you'll probably find yourself testing something from it before you finish each chapter.
