Here's what's actually happening inside your body right now.
Every cell in your body needs oxygen to produce energy. Your blood maintains a precise pH of 7.36 — slightly alkaline — and the moment that balance tips, everything suffers. Your energy drops. Your thinking clouds. Your body shifts into survival mode.

I learned this the hard way on a karate mat.
I've been involved in martial arts most of my life. I've trained alongside state and national champions. I've competed, graded, and pushed my body to its limits more times than I can count.
But it wasn't until my senior brown belt grading — a gruelling five-hour test of physical endurance, mental sharpness, and emotional resilience — that I truly understood what breath could do.
On the drive to the dojo that morning, I did what I now call pre-oxygenation — deep, deliberate breathing to saturate my body with oxygen before the work began. Throughout the grading, while others gasped and faded, I stayed focused. Stayed relaxed. Stayed strong.
At the end of five hours — board breaking, — my instructor looked at me and said: "There was no way you were not going to break that."
That evening I reflected on one thing: the breath.
Not the training alone. Not the fitness alone. The breath.
