AUGUST: The Visiting Privilege by Joy Williams

In our August meeting (English), we will discuss four stories by the wonderful writer Joy Williams, written in her unique style of short sentences, witty dialogue, dark humor, and tenderness. We'll dive into stories where not much happens in terms of plot but which are nevertheless full of movement, because their characters are lost and constantly on the move. We will follow them as they drive their cars through the snowy landscapes of New England, stopping at diners and motels, indulging in idle conversations, searching for meaning and something to hold on to in the face of losses they cannot accept or comprehend. What is the power of wandering--whether physical, conversational or emotional--when all else has failed? Devoid of hope or any sense of certainty, these adrift and slightly eccentric souls will have one last, magical resource: love.
