“… Inspired by real events, “Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands” is a wise and luminous story about a northern family, a southern town, and the senseless murder that sparks an extraordinary act of courage.” ~ Penguin Random House

Hi All,

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Wishful Thinking Women (WTW), I am planing something new and different for us this summer: the Wishful Thinking Women’s Book Club & Author Talk.

Years ago, I worked for the huge and still growing Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System in Tampa, Florida. I had an amazing job. One of my favorite aspects of being Director of Public Relations & Partnerships was organizing our community-wide annual reading program, One Community, One Book. As coordinator of the project, I was able to work closely with the authors while developing outreach and special events related to their books.

The experience of working with interesting, accomplished, creative authors was priceless. One of my favorite authors was, Susan Carol McCarthy. McCarthy’s debut novel “Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands” was well received in literary and community circles and touched me deeply. Her words and story have stayed with me 15+ years on, but even more so lately when I realized, after relocating to Leesburg, I was now living in the epicenter of Susan’s story in central Florida.

Susan’s protagonist is a 13 year-old girl, which allows us to view the action through her youthful perspective and reminded me of “To Kill a Mockingbird’s narrator, Scout. Susan skillfully weaves historic facts and situations into a touching coming of age tale in which her father played a pivotal roll. In fact, it was at her father’s urgings that Susan wrote the book.

Join us by reading “Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands” this summer, and then for a special WTW Zoom event in August featuring Susan Carol McCarthy. What could be better than talking with the author after reading her book?
