About the Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival’s name comes from the tradition of dragon boat racing, which started over 2,000 years ago. When Qu Yuan, a loyal official, drowned himself in the Miluo River, local people raced out in boats to try to save him or find his body. These boats were decorated to look like dragons, powerful and respected creatures in Chinese culture. The races became a way to honor Qu Yuan’s loyalty and courage. Today, dragon boat racing is a major part of the festival, symbolizing teamwork, bravery, and respect for tradition. The colorful dragon boats, drumbeats, and competitive spirit keep Qu Yuan’s memory alive and bring communities together.
