Lilydale - East Warby - Redwoods Overnight Bush Camp Redux
Details
Lilydale - East Warby - Redwoods Overnight Bush Camp. Melbourne Cup ‘weekend’.
With the Redwood Forest due to re-open to ravaging car visitors in early December, let’s enjoy the peace and solitude like we had back in March (see pics) before it does.
110 kms & 1200 vm over 2 days. Mainly gravel. Medium / intermediate. Route here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44884382
Some bicycle touring / camping experience recommended. Suitable for touring / CX / gravel / XC MTB type bikes with appropriate overnight camp gear-carrying capacity.
Monday:
Bean Scene Cafe, Lilydale, 10:00am.
Lilydale direct train departs Flinders Street at 8:45am to arrive at 9:37am. The next train (9:07am) also arrives in time for pedal-off (but not brunch).
If driving, car parking at train station, about 400m from the cafe.
After brunching, we’ll pedal off at 10.30 via Lilydale Lake & Mt Evelyn Aqueduct to the Warby Rail Trail, then on to Launching Place for lunch.
From Don Valley via Haining Farm and the rifle range, we follow scenic back roads to Wesburn, then back onto the rail trail to Warburton.
At Warby, we can stock up at the IGA before heading off to the Redwood Forest via riverside, back roads & tracks, to set up for dinner & camp.
There are NO facilities here, except the nearby, fast flowing Cement Creek (recommend boiling or treating water first).
You will need to bring your own camping, sleeping, water, dinner, breakfast, cooking facilities, & toiletries. No toilets at forest - closest are 4kms away, which we pass enroute to camp.
Tuesday (Melbourne Cup Day):
We head up to the O’Shannassy Aqueduct, following it back to Warburton. We’ll visit the Water Park before heading into town for brunch, then rejoining the rail trail back to Lilydale, with probably a stop at Carriage Cafe, Seville, and final refreshments at the Olinda Creek Hotel (& some horse race).
Details subject to change.
