The microservice architecture has traversed the hype cycle and is no longer as popular as it once was. In part, there's been an unhealthy backlash to the hype and to poorly designed microservices. But mostly, the industry has matured: organizations have learned to use the microservice architecture only when they suffer from the socio-technical problems it addresses. Today, however, a new technology — also in the middle of its own hype cycle — is dramatically increasing the need for microservices: GenAI coding agents.

This two-part talk explores the surprising connection between GenAI and microservices. In the first part, I explain why GenAI coding agents, by scaling software development, amplify the rate of change and create the very scaling pressures that the microservice architecture is designed to handle. You will learn how to recognize the signals that indicate GenAI coding agents have caused you to outgrow your monolith.

In the second part, I show how GenAI can help you design a microservice architecture. I demonstrate an AI-based assistant that guides you through the process. You will learn how GenAI can accelerate the journey from monolith to a well-designed microservice architecture.

Bio

Chris Richardson helps organizations modernize their application architectures to accelerate software delivery and enable fast, sustainable flow - prerequisite for using coding agents effectively. He is the creator of [Microservices.io](http://microservices.io), a widely used pattern language for the microservice architecture, and author of Microservices Patterns and POJOs in Action.
Earlier in his career, Chris founded the original [CloudFoundry.com](http://cloudfoundry.com), an early Java PaaS for Amazon EC2. He is a recognized thought leader in software architecture and speaks regularly at international conferences about architecting for fast flow. Chris is also the founder of Eventuate, an open-source microservices collaboration platform.
