Shakespeare, domestic tragedy and collaboration - 'Arden of Faversham'

Details

For May’s meeting we’re continuing this year’s exploration of how Shakespeare developed his craft—tracing the influences, collaborations, and creative choices that shaped his writing. As we’ve seen in As You Like It, Shakespeare’s plays reflect the language, style, and themes of genres such as the pastoral tradition.

In May we will focus on Arden of Faversham (1592), a domestic tragedy based on a real, notorious historical murder. Often attributed in part to a young Shakespeare, this play reveals his potential collaboration with contemporaries Christopher Marlowe and Thomas Kyd, opening up fascinating questions about collaboration, authorship, and adaptation of source material in the Elizabethan theatre.

Our President Sue Tweg will start with an introductory talk before we move into a workshop-style session with scene readings and group discussion. No knowledge of the play is necessary and handouts of scenes will be provided.

Following our discussion there will be a delicious afternoon tea and the chance to connect with fellow Shakespeare lovers. We look forward to
seeing you there!

Cost: Just $7 per person
