Shakespeare and John Lyly's 'Endymion': A great feast of languages

Details

The Melbourne Shakespeare Society invites you to our August meeting to explore John Lyly's 'Endymion' (1588) and its influence on Shakespeare. Lyly's play is an allegorical Elizabethan comedy centred on the lovesick courtier Endymion, who is hopelessly enamoured with Cynthia, a chaste and powerful moon goddess.

There will be a talk introducing the play, its courtly context and language: the elaborate euphuistic style comprised of balance, antithesis, and ornate rhetoric. We will also discuss how Lyly's drama influenced Shakespeare, before moving into a workshop-style session with scene readings and group discussion.

No knowledge of the plays is required and there will be handouts of scenes discussed.

Following our discussion there will be a delicious afternoon tea and the chance to connect with fellow Shakespeare lovers. We look forward to seeing you there!

Date: Saturday 2nd August
Location: Meeting Room, Collingwood Library
Time: 2pm
Cost: Just $7 per person!
