The MSS invites you to join us to explore the play 'Volpone' by Shakespeare's contemporary dramatist, Ben Jonson.
Set in the opulent, morally slippery world of Renaissance Venice, 'Volpone' is Jonson at his most incisive — a dazzling satire of avarice, deception, and human folly. Yet behind the laughter lies a disturbingly modern truth: the pursuit of wealth at any cost, the art of manipulation, and the theatre of self-interest remains as familiar to us as it was in Jonson’s day.
Join us this month as we explore how Volpone’s cunning foxes and gullible vultures speak — often uncomfortably — to our own times.
Our meeting will include:
- a sonnet reading, followed by
- an engaging talk and open discussion led by Dr Peter Groves, included readings of selected scenes.
As always, there will be an afternoon tea to connect with our community of Shakespeare and theatre lovers.
