Join me for a relaxed Gujarati dinner at Kathiyavadi Krunch in Malvern East. I'm from Gujarat, and one of my favourite things is sharing the food I grew up with, so I've put this together as a casual chance to gather around a table and enjoy proper home-style Gujarati cooking together.

Kathiyavadi Krunch is a family-run, 100% vegetarian restaurant serving food from the Kathiawar region of Gujarat. Kathiyavadi cooking is known for being hearty and full of flavour: lots of garlic and red chilli, smoky spices, fresh chutneys, and bread straight off the tava. It's comforting, generous, and best enjoyed family-style with a group, which is exactly what we'll do.

We'll meet outside the restaurant doors at 6:45pm to say hello, get seated around 7:00pm, and settle in for dinner together. No experience with Indian food needed, just bring an appetite and curiosity.

A quick note: whether I book a table depends on numbers, so please RSVP if you're coming. Everyone orders and pays for their own meal on the night.

Who this is for

  • Anyone who loves good food and meeting new people
  • First-timers to Gujarati or Indian food, very welcome
  • Solo attendees are absolutely welcome, you'll fit right in

A few dishes to look out for
Kathiyavadi & Gujarati shaak (curries):

  • Lasaniya Bataka, a spicy, garlicky red-masala potato curry, a must for garlic lovers
  • Ringan No Olo, smoky mashed eggplant with garlic and green chilli, the Kathiyavadi take on baingan bharta
  • Sev Tameta, a sweet-and-spicy tomato curry topped with crunchy sev
  • Surati Undhiyu, a green-masala medley of mixed veg, papdi and methi muthia, a classic winter dish that's perfect for July

Traditional roti collection:

  • Bajari Rotla, smoky gluten-free millet roti, traditionally served with ringan no olo and garlic chutney
  • Juwar Rotla, light sorghum flatbread with a subtle nutty taste
  • Bhakhari, thick rustic wheat flatbread, a true Kathiyavadi staple
  • Masala Thepla, whole-wheat flatbread spiced with methi (fenugreek) and garlic

Gujarati sweets:

  • Mohanthal, a rich, melt-in-the-mouth gram flour and ghee sweet
  • Shrikhand, creamy saffron yoghurt dessert with dryfruits
  • Puran Poli, soft flatbread stuffed with sweet toor daal

The kitchen freshly prepares the traditional shaaks, so they can take up to 30 minutes, all part of the relaxed pace.

Important notes
This is a casual social meetup arranged so we can enjoy dinner together. It isn't run by or affiliated with Kathiyavadi Krunch. We're just an independent group going along as paying customers.

Because whether I reserve a table depends on numbers, please RSVP if you plan to come, and if your plans change, update your RSVP so the count stays accurate. Kathiyavadi Krunch says it's open until 10pm on Thursdays, but hours can change, so it's worth checking before you head out.
