Chemistry Lab Tour: Lights, Chemistry, Action! at Melbourne Uni

Join me for a behind-the-scenes tour of the University of Melbourne's chemistry labs as part of the Science at Melbourne Festival. We'll get to step inside working research laboratories where scientists are designing molecules, reactions and materials to make the world safer, smarter and more sustainable — everything from lasers and solar panels to microplastics and public health.

The Faculty of Science says we'll explore the Polyzos Laboratory, the Australian Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants, and the Ultrafast and Microspectroscopy Laboratories. It's a great one if you're at all curious about how chemistry connects to physics, biology, maths and medicine — no science background needed, just an interest in seeing real research up close.

We'll meet at 6:30pm outside heytea Melbourne University, say hi, then walk over to the Chemistry Building together so we arrive in good time for the 7:00pm tour.

This is a casual social meetup arranged so we can head along together — it isn't run by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the University of Melbourne or the Faculty of Science. Please book your own ticket directly through Eventbrite; an RSVP here doesn't include entry.

Timeline

• 6:30pm – Meet outside heytea Melbourne University, and say hello

Transport
The Chemistry Building is in Parkville, on the main Melbourne Uni campus. Trams along Swanston Street and Royal Parade stop close by, and it's an easy walk from the city. Parking around Parkville is limited, so public transport is your easiest bet.

Bring

• Your booked ticket (on your phone is fine)
• A jacket for the walk over and standing around outside
• Comfortable closed-toe shoes — sensible for lab spaces
