Free Street Circus: Ocker by Na Djinang Circus

Join me for a free, hour-long street circus show in the middle of Footscray. Ocker is a roving outdoor performance by Na Djinang Circus, a First Nations-led contemporary circus company, presented as part of Melbourne Fringe. Performers lay and pull up a portable railway track in real time, moving through the mall with acrobatics, physical theatre and music while the audience follows along. It's a big, strange, funny, occasionally confronting look at Australian identity, performed on concrete rather than in a theatre.

We'll meet at Crumbz Deli in Nicholson St Mall at 11:30am for a quick coffee, then wander over to the performance area around 11:45am to find a good spot before it kicks off at 12pm. It runs for about an hour, and afterwards anyone who's keen can grab lunch at one of the many spots around Footscray.
This is a free event with no ticket and no booking — just turn up. It's also a standing, moving show, so you'll be on your feet and shifting around with the crowd for the hour.

Timeline

• 11:30am – Meet at Crumbz Deli, grab a coffee and say hi
• 11:45am – Head over to the performance area and find a spot
• 12:00pm – Circus performance starts
• 1:00pm – Circus performance ends
• Afterwards – Optional lunch nearby for anyone who wants to stay on

Tickets / cost
Ocker is free and doesn't require a ticket or booking — Melbourne Fringe lists it as a free public event, so we can simply show up. You'll just need to cover your own coffee at Crumbz Deli and lunch afterwards if you join for that.

Transport
Footscray Station is a short walk from Nicholson St Mall and is served by several train lines plus a number of bus routes, so public transport is easily the simplest way in.

Bring

• Weather-appropriate clothing — this is an outdoor show
• Comfortable shoes for standing and moving around
• Hat, sunscreen or a rain jacket depending on the day
• Money/card for coffee and lunch

Expect

• Difficulty: Easy, but you'll be standing and walking for around an hour
• Pace: Relaxed — the show moves, and we move with it
• Vibe: Casual, curious, outdoors, a bit unpredictable
• Group style: Come and go as you like; the coffee before and lunch after are both optional

Important notes

• This is a casual social meetup arranged so we can head along together. It isn't run by, affiliated with or endorsed by Na Djinang Circus or Melbourne Fringe, and I'm not the organiser of the performance itself.
• An RSVP here isn't a ticket. The show is free and unticketed, but entry and viewing are up to the venue and the performers on the day.
• Melbourne Fringe notes a content warning for colonisation, and the show deals with Australian identity in a direct way. Worth knowing before you come.
• It's listed as a predominantly standing event that requires audience mobility — you'll need to move with the performance. Melbourne Fringe also lists it as wheelchair accessible.
• Being outdoors, it's weather-dependent and details can change at short notice. I'll post an update here if I hear anything, but it's worth checking the Melbourne Fringe page on the day too.
• Please follow any instructions from the performers, crew or council staff, and give the performance space room — there's real acrobatics happening on hard ground.
