November Data Viz Meetup

Details

This meetup we'll be learning about the fascinating world of medical image analytics with Peter Goodin, a senior cognitive data scientist at HitIQ. Also, bring any cool visualisations you've come across, as we'll be doing our first data viz show and tell!

Proceedings
6:00 -- Intro
6:15 -- First talk: A quick introduction to working with medical images
6:45 -- Data Viz Show and Tell
7:15 -- Community announcements and close
7:30 -- Informal discussion

Note: this meetup is online. See the attached Zoom link.

Peter Goodin: A quick introduction to working with medical images

Non-invasive methods to visualise the human body in spatial and temporal dimensions have revolutionised medical science and diagnostics. But how as data professionals can we work with it? In this talk, I'll cover the basics of medical image analytics. Focusing on magnetic resonance images of the head, we'll cover how the images are represented as data, how to load and manipulate these data and how to visualise them using Python.

Peter is a senior cognitive data scientist with HitIQ and was a stroke neuroimaging research fellow at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. They have over a decade of experience working with people data of all kinds and their current career highlight was running a condom study.
They also play guitar. Very badly.

Data Viz Show and Tell!

For our second slot, we're going to try something new. Bring along a visualisation that you've come across recently that you think is cool*, or one you created that you're proud of, or maybe one you've found that's horribly misleading in an interesting way worth unpacking. We'll open the floor for anyone to briefly talk about the viz they're showing off (eg 2-5 min) and for the group to discuss. If you'd like to bring a viz for show and tell, just rock up and be ready to share your screen to show it off.

*Maybe it does a great job of distilling a complex dataset into a clear narrative. Maybe it's a particularly innovative form of visualisation. Maybe it's really really pretty. Or maybe it just makes you go woah!.
