Star Trek Through the Lens of Stoic Philosophy
Details
Join the Memphis Stoics at Nerd Nite Memphis for Star Trek Through the Lens of Stoic Philosophy with presenter Jonathan Holland.
Nerd Nite is an informal gathering at which nerds get together for nerdery of all sorts (well, mostly presentations, food, and drinks). Nerds and non-nerds alike gather to meet, drink (beer, cocktails, coffee, tea, soda) and learn something new. Each evening, two nerds will give short, fun presentations where they can nerd out about string theory, Aztec mythology, or some similarly nerdilicious topic. Its like The Discovery Channel or Ted Talks, in person.
The sci-fi franchise Star Trek will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. The franchise includes 13 television series with over 1,000 episodes, 13 feature films, countless novels, comic book series, documentaries, video games, fan conventions and experiences. A prominent feature across the many iterations of Star Trek is the exploration of philosophical themes.
Stoic philosophy emerged in the fourth century BCE in Athens and thrived as one of the most influential philosophies in the classical Greco-Roman world. It has continued to influence the modern world, experiencing a resurgence in the 21st century. Join us as we explore themes of Stoicism in Star Trek.
Jonathan Holland is a higher education professional, chief historian for the Station Shelby [Memphis] Star Trek fan association, and founder of the Memphis Stoics discussion group.
Plus: Nerd Nite will feature a second presentation on another interesting topic - so come for Stoicism in Trek and stay for more nerdy fun!
