Melanated Women Read: Black Cake

Details

Melanated Women Read is a book discussion group by and especially for Black women. This month we talk about Charmaine Wilkerson’s best-selling debut novel, which has been made into an award-nominated streaming series.

Black Cake begins as two estranged siblings delve into the hidden past of their mother, who has just died. How does this past connect to their mother’s traditional Caribbean black cake, and to her final request to “share the black cake when the time is right?”

About Charmaine Wilkerson:

Charmaine Wilkerson is an American writer who has lived in Jamaica and is based in Italy. A graduate of Barnard College and Stanford University, she is a former journalist whose award-winning short fiction has appeared in various magazines and anthologies. Black Cake is her first novel.
