North of the border, up Canada way...

Menlo Park Library’s Mystery Readers Group is a different kind of book group: rather than all reading the same book, we share our reading of different books surrounding a particular theme—mysteries set in Canada, for instance.

In case you need some ideas to get you started, here are:

A Few Leads:

Still Life, by Louise Penny: Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team are called to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal, just north of the U.S. border. The locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods.

The Body in the Back Garden, by Mark Waddell: Out-of-work investigative journalist Luke Tremblay has only come to Crescent Cove, a small hamlet on Vancouver Island long enough to close out his late aunt’s estate—but then a dead stranger is found laying in the garden, Luke seems to be the lead culprit.

6:40 to Montreal, by Eva Jurczyk: Agatha's husband bought her a first-class ticket on the famous six-hour train from Toronto to Montreal as a present—a one-day writing retreat. But when the train breaks down in the middle of the Canadian woods and one of Agatha's fellow passengers dies quietly in his seat—well, so much for “retreating.”

Among the Departed, by Vicki Delany: Fifteen years ago, Brian Nowak walked off from his home in Trafalgar, British Columbia, allegedly to buy cigarettes. He has not been seen since. Now some old bones have turned up, and Constable Molly Smith’s investigation is turning the community upside-down.

Detective Aunty, by Uzma Jalaluddin: When her grown daughter is arrested for murder, Kausar Khan heads to Toronto for the first time in nearly twenty years, returning to the predominantly South Asian Golden Crescent suburb where she raised her children. Kausar investigates, with help from old friends and her plucky teenage granddaughter.

Any mystery set in Canada is fair game! Join us to share your favorite read of the month, and hear about some great books from fellow mystery enthusiasts.

Menlo Park’s Mystery Readers Group meets online on the third Tuesday of each month.
