BACKGROUND
For those of you not familiar with it, the Coyote Mountain Loop is often considered the best of our series of local history hikes. It is a 5.5-mile loop with moderate elevation change that takes place on both public and private land in the hills north of Hidden Springs, and focuses on historic Cartwright Road and the community that existed in the shadow of Stack Rock in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. You'll also learn quite a bit about early traffic patterns, the Rossi/Robie sawmill on Shafer Creek and its importance to early Boise and connection to Dry Creek, and the history of the Healy Toll Gate. Towards the end--if time allows--those who wish can make the short, steep climb to the top of Coyote Mountain for a breathtaking view and BYOB snacks at the Stack Rock Ranch picnic area. The focus of this hike is the earliest years of settlement in Dry Creek, 1860s-1880s.
