"I don't feel so good. Wait, what just happened?! I feel GREAT! Where'd my pain go? Did I just ... die?? Am I dead??? No, wait.. this is weird, because... I don't feel dead. How kewl is this?! OK, so now what?! (Trumpets.) Uh oh... This can't be good."
"Welcome [insert your name here] to "THIS IS YOUR LIFE"
No, it's not the TV show. It's your Life Review, your special time to behold every deed and motive of the newly departed lifetime, panoramically, and with crystal clarity. Ask yourself, when my time comes (and come it shall), will I be delighted, pleasantly surprised, slightly embarrassed, or utterly horrified? Chances are: All of the Above, muttering "OMG. If only I'd listened to literally millions of near-death experiencers! Woe is me! WOE is me!" (If ever a time to be melodramatic, this might be it!)
Rest in peace, friend, assured that the Life Review isn't punishment, it's clarity about a fundamental truth: Reality is saturated with meaning and purpose, its goal is love, growth, and service— not bling or applause.
"OMG, I already knew that! But still I scrolled past, rationalized past, 'retail therapied' myself out from opportunities for courage, apologies never made, gifts hidden in a box marked “someday.”
You then realize how you settled and went 'All In' on a very thin story. You mistook busyness for purpose, popularity for connection, and comfort for peace, while the only ledger that truly mattered was simple: Have I grown more honest? Looked for opportunities to help whenever I could? Have I loved well? What could I have done better and why didn't I? What was I thinking?! Profound parallel moment from Schindler's List. 2 min.
If that scene made your stomach drop, good! That's your conscience begging you to reorder your values while you can still pick up the phone, mend the bridge, mentor the kid, tell the truth about yourself to yourself, and create that one special thing that only you can offer to this injured world. Trade stuff & status for Character, Relationships, Courage, and Contribution. So when you do (final/ly) arrive at your Life Review, you'll feel confident and grateful. Most importantly, since learning is cumulative, how about letting your current life be the greatest gift you can give to your Future Self? (Powerful interview with Jeff Janssen -"Don’t wait to die to find out how to live" Grab your popcorn!)
