The notion that we receive assistance from 'Spirit Guides' is hardly a New Age notion; it is as old as spirituality itself. In Hebrew, the word malech (מַלְאָך), usually translated as angel, simply means messenger (and they didn't have wings until the 4th century!) Christianity calls interactions between "visible and invisible" righteous beings "The Communion of Saints." Some examples...
