Laughing Sunday: Divine Reversal and Joy
Details
If we don't die, then what is there really to worry about?!
"Laughing Sunday" is a 15th century tradition dedicated to joy and being less serious, not least about religion. We'll share funny things that happened in church, where laughter is generally frowned upon, tell irreligious jokes about heaven or Satan, and celebrate the divine gift of laughter.
In this spiritually 'enchanted' world, every morning could easliy begin not merely by waking but with joining the dance of becoming — where every birdcall, every heartbeat, and every thought is a living thread in the universe’s tapestry of relentless creativity towards greater beauty. Each moment as a fresh emergence, not as something "already finished," but as something waiting to be shaped by choice, care, and imagination, by US.
Even worship would feel less like stepping into a sanctuary and more like realizing you never left one. A whispered prayer at a riverbank, a shared meal among friends, the planting of a tree, moents with a beloved animal companion — all would be lit from within by the awareness that the goodness, the pulse beneath every act, lures the world gently toward richer beauty.
Every Sunday — especially this Laughing Sunday, that ancient festival of divine reversal and joy — would be a reminder that creation is not solemn but exuberant, that even through death, absurdity, and failure, the universe dances forward in mirth and resurrection.
Communities would gather not only to contemplate but to laugh with God, affirming that the cosmic adventure is a comedy as much as a drama, and that the Spirit’s final word is not tragedy, but delight.
Sin would not be mere disobedience, but the refusal to participate in the world's unfolding possibilities.
'Salvation' would be choosing to live with greater sensitivity, creativity, humor, and courage, moment to moment, recognizing that we are co-authors of a living cosmos where even laughter is holy.
So come and share joy, relate stories about funny things that happened in 'serious' places (like church), as we celebrate laughing at ourselves, pretense, and pomposity.
Even Pope Francis deemed laughter and humor essential and indispensible to spirituality.
