No Small Talk at Metis: The Divide by Jason Hickel
Details
Politics, economics and history. Reading in English.
Eighteen of us came together for our first discussion, on Omar El Akkad, and the conversation was so good we’re carrying it straight into the next book.
This month we read The Divide by economic anthropologist Jason Hickel: a sweeping history of global inequality, from colonialism to the present day. Hickel asks why the gap between rich and poor countries keeps widening, and argues that poverty is a political problem rather than a natural one. It’s sharp, provocative and full of material to argue about, which is exactly what this club is for.
Come with your questions, your objections and your own perspective. Whether you’ve finished the book, are halfway through or just want to listen in, you’re welcome at the table. The best evenings are the ones where we really disagree, kindly.
