Our First Book Discussion -

  • Future Shock - Alvin Toffler

Future Shock was written in 1984 on the impact of rapid change on humanity and future shock as the state created when the acceleration of change exceeds humanity's ability to adjust to that change or evolve.
Keep in mind that since it was written in 1984 so many of his statements reference males exclusively. This is a factor of the time in which the book was written. However, the subject matter and his insights are extremely pertinent to the time we are in.
I think many of us are struggling with the degree and pace of change, particularly as someone working in tech. As someone who has always been developing skills, I find myself struggling to know where to put my skill development efforts. I frequently ask myself if the skill development is worthy of a lot of time if I don't know if the skills will be valuable in another couple years.

Think about his analysis and how this might have changed since 1984. Have patterns continued in the direction he was seeing, or have patterns changed and what do you think is the reason for this.

Also, the author gives certain statistics and numbers highlighting changes. Feel free to look for data from 1984 to present and present a story or analysis of how you would update his analysis to the present time.
