Adoptees Vs. The Nain Rouge
Hopcat Detroit, 4265 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI, USAdoptees will be making mischief at the Marche Du Nain Rouge this year in Midtown Detroit.
This year we will be crashing the Marche in Detroit to banish the evils of secrecy, sealed records, and lack of citizenship while reclaiming our identities and rights! Each year, Detroiters gather for the Marche Du Nain Rouge, Detroit’s largest community art parade, where YOU are the parade. More than 10,000 Detroiters in costumes, alter egos, handmade creations, and wild ideas transform the streets into a one-of-a-kind spectacle.
Because the goal is to banish the evil Nain Rouge (Red Devil), the event is basically political street theater, so bold, symbolic, and satirical costumes fit right in.We’re looking for adoptees who want to join us, pass out adoptee rights literature and stickers, and spark conversations. Wear whatever you want, but funny and creative ideas help get the message across. Think babies with signs that say “I’m not a commodity,” Handmaids representing birth mothers, puzzle pieces labeled “Missing Identity,” costumes highlighting sealed records or citizenship gaps, or go wherever your creativity takes you!
***Bring your best idea and meet us at the entrance to HopCat near 2nd and Canfield at 11:00 a.m. on March 22.***
Event Itinerary
- 11:30 a.m.+ Music starts as the crowd gathers at the Community Stage at Canfield and Second.
- 1:00 p.m. Opening ceremony if the Nain Rouge appears.
- ~1:30 p.m. The Nain leads a procession toward the Masonic Temple. Remember: you are the parade, so come in costume, bring instruments, build a human-powered float, or get creative.
- 2:30–5:00 p.m. Free official afterparty in the Masonic Temple’s Fountain Ballroom with drinks, vendors, and DJs.
The parade route is approximately a mile, and the event is Kid & dog friendly: Kids are common, and well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome, but the after party in the basement at the Masonic Temple will not let you bring your dog into the building.
